COMMITTEE FOR COMMON SENSE

OUR CONCERNS RELATING TO THE PROPOSED MONTESANO ROUNDABOUT AND REST AREA PROJECTS---WHICH WE BELIEVE ARE POORLY CONCEIVED

ONGOING MAINTENANCE COSTS;   Why did DOT stop building Rest Stops 20 years ago? The Elma Rest Stop costs nearly $200K annually.

TRAFFIC CONCERNS;  Traffic would be directed to the intersection at Wynooche and Main Street, perhaps the worst traffic travelled intersection in the city. Would this require another traffic light or roundabout? The mayor talks about attracting 100,000 cars a year. If that is divided equally over all 12 months, that would be an additional 274 cars daily at that intersection!  And at least ¼ of the year, tourist do not travel which would mean more vehicles than 274 are expected during the peak tourist months.

RAILROAD;   Cars would need to cross the tracks two times to get back to the freeway. The crossing on Sylvia Street is not built to handle more than local traffic and would require improvements and permission from the railroad. This could take years and additional costs.   The Railroad has not been included in any discussions of the project.

ROUNDABOUT;   This would create a significant problem for the trucking industry. The rigs hauling oversized loads would have problems trying to make the turns.  (Compact 110 ft. single lane diameter.)   The project would most likely require building over the Wetlands, creating additional costs and delays. It will not make it safer.

VOODOO ECONOMICS;   The mayor claims that for each car that is drawn into town, an average of $20 per carload will be generated. According to this formula, if 100,000 cars are lured into town that would generate about $50K in additional revenue (the City gets about 2 cents out of every dollar generated through sales tax.) Where are these people going to spend all this money assuming they did not return to the freeway after their “business”?

IMPACTING EXISTING BUSINESSES;  Allowing travellers and/or RV's to pull into the Rest Stop to sleep could draw business away from existing motels and RV parks, right across the street.

UNDESIREABLES;   Need we say more? Rest Stops can attract a whole array of activities that we don't need in Montesano.
